Marine0311 Posted November 13, 2018 Share #1 Posted November 13, 2018 I've been studying the expansion of the Marine Corps lately and how it went from approx 10,000 officers and men to 60,000+. The beginnings of an air wing...machinegun companies...heavy weapons.. etc etc. Some of the problems that plagued them initially as I understand was the lack of American made MGs, planes...field guns, much of which they received from the French and the British. From what I gather, the first designated artillery regiments sent to France did not see action nor were they issued their guns. Apparently they were slated to fight as infantry in the campaigns of 1919 with the 5th Marine Bde. Obviously the Marines had prior experience on the big guns (deck guns, field pieces etc). Is anything known what took them so long to incorporate their own artillery and when did the artillery field really mature? (also, could anyone identify the model of the 3in field gun in the 1916 photo I've attached?)

Marine0311 Posted November 14, 2018 Author Share #3 Posted November 14, 2018 That was my hunch, though it is missing the gun shield and has different trails.
