SARGE Posted November 6, 2018 Share #1 Posted November 6, 2018 Gents, I picked up a nice clean Springfield made Krag M 1898 rifle over the weekend that I thought I would show. This particular rifle is unaltered and was made in 1900 according to the inspector cartouche on the stock. No unit markings except for "333" on the top of the butt plate which I presume is simply a rack number. So what sling would be proper for this rifle? The two claw leather sling normally seen on Springfield M1903 or M1917 rifles or something else? Thanks for looking.
everforward Posted November 6, 2018 Share #2 Posted November 6, 2018 They had a canvas 'tropical' sling that was also available, that's what I had on mine.
warguy Posted November 6, 2018 Share #3 Posted November 6, 2018 Very nice rifle! I have one of these on my list to represent ones used by the Marines. If I remember, a M1898 made in 1900 would fit that bill-if I am off let me know. Thanks for sharing, once again a clean firearm I would be proud to own. M1Garandy Posted November 6, 2018 Share #5 Posted November 6, 2018 I've seen M1887 slings dated in the early 1900's for Krag use.

doyler Posted November 6, 2018 Share #7 Posted November 6, 2018 Nice rifle George I have seen several Krags with the M1907 slings as used or from Legion and VFW hall stock.Hard to say if they were sent this way or just what was avaiable to use buy the Legion and VFW.Also seen Keer mo buckles on them. Im guessing its possible to have a M1907 sling( 03 Sprinfleld,Garand,Enfield etc) is the rifle saw use as a military weapon after the )3 came out.I would look to find an earlier model. AGM had a great early krag sling a couple years ago at the Minnesota show.I forgot to go back to buy it...it was unissied and mint.Never been on a rifle
sundance Posted November 6, 2018 Share #8 Posted November 6, 2018 That is a beauty. Those are a bit pricy unless they've come down somewhat recently. It's always said that they had the smoothest action going. Congrats on your purchase.
268th C.A. Posted November 6, 2018 Share #9 Posted November 6, 2018 I have the leather sling on mine. As with my Govt. 45.70 trap door, its just a little longer....
Marchville1918 Posted November 6, 2018 Share #10 Posted November 6, 2018 Thats a fine looking Krag. They used a lot of Krags for training in WW1. A few got to France. I would think that the model 1907 and even the Kerr web sling would be appropriate for that time period and probably easier to find than those early single claw slings. Rifleman Posted November 6, 2018 Share #12 Posted November 6, 2018 Didn't they also use the canvas Mills sling?
thorin6 Posted November 7, 2018 Share #13 Posted November 7, 2018 If you want the sling that was most likely used with the M1898 issued in 1900 go with the leather M1887 or the canvas Mills sling (if you can afford it and can find it). If you are looking for a later sling go with the Kerr sling. I've seen them with the M1907 sling but it's not really period correct. Nice addition to your collection. I've been down the road with Krags, and finally settled on a M1896 rifle and M1898 carbine and got rid of the others.

SARGE Posted November 7, 2018 Author Share #15 Posted November 7, 2018 Thanks to everyone for their very helpful feedback. I have been looking for a nice example of this Krag rifle for awhile. I was able to get into this one at what I think was a reasonable price in a trade at the Wichita Military Collectors show last weekend. I think one of the earlier slings would be better for me if I can find a Mills or a leather M1887 sling at a reasonable price I will search for that. One more thing to be on the lookout for. The Model 1887 sling is the one with a single brass hook and a standing loop on the other end correct? George
