Another D Loop posted on ebay.

Posting for thoughts.

Sorry I cannot post the link but the ebay item number is 283244427533.

Before you get too excited, the helmet was repainted blue and is missing straps.

It looks good to me! The blue paint might be removed with Goof Off and a lot of patience. The heat stamp of 206A is in the proper range as well. I think I'm going to try to pursue this one, best of luck gentlemen!

I had a D Loop that I used goof off on and was able to make it look nice.

Indeed, it was painted gold if I remember correctly? Just a couple weeks ago I was successful in stripping a St. Clair of its post-war VFW repaint. Both the original factory finish and texture were well preserved.

What do you guys think it’s going to go for? Do you think the blue overpaint will affect the value much? It’s at about $400 with 5 and a half days still to go!

Original D-Bail from a really good seller (Ken N) of German Helmets Inc.

I'm guessing this one will go for $800+, it's a really good shell with both D-bails still intact.

Lol... add another $1000.00 to that and you have the final price. It went for WAY more than it's worth.

Worth as we all know can be subjective. Some will value an item more than others.

Its all what someone is willing to pay or with ebay and bidding it can get to be emotions involved or the competitiveness to win.As well as shill bidding.

Many times we see same or similar items sit at show after show going unsold priced at ebay level based on an auction. Some sellers on ebay due to reputation and rank in the collectors field will bring a better price than an item by an unknown seller or who doesn't hold the reputation of a well known seller/dealer.

Ron, while I agree that emotion plays a big part(we won't talk about one particular auction in my past), a little research of prevailing prices(rather than personal feelings of worth) would have revealed that without straps, needing an overpaint removal(too many "OMG, what did I just do?" variables), lack of provenance, lack of liner, etc., would have revealed that the new owner was going to overpay once he passed the $1000.00 mark.

Egads! Definitely a bidding war. $1800 is what the shell is worth with original chinstraps intact, think this one should of been in the $900 range. Oh well, congrats to the winner and seller.

Well, Gentleman,

I am the new owner of this helmet and would like to address a few of the comments made. While it is entirely possible I "overpaid" for this helmet (as it appears currently) and I would even concede that point, but I'd argue not by that much. I am thinking some of you might be stuck in the price ranges of years past. Unquestionably-original M2s do not come up for sale often. There is a purported original currently on eBay with an asking price of $1650. That one lacks the tell-tale signs of an original, visible 'feet' on the loops, legible heat stamp in the proper range, etc. A few days ago Steve at M-1 Helmet Depot sold an M2 that he offered at $2500. It too was rigger-repaired and came with a small pile of named field gear and original chinstraps, though not the original para straps. The claim that $1800 would be appropriate if the helmet in question still retained its original para straps, I see as a considerable underestimation of its value. To prove the point, please direct me to an original M2 helmet with no repairs that still retains its original para straps, because I will buy it if priced at $1800. Some of you stated that the helmet in question is more of an $800-$900 helmet. It just so happens that I have offered (and sold) an M2 in that exact price range. While it didn't have a blue repaint, both of its loops were broken. I like to think I have a pretty good pulse on the helmet collecting community and do a decent job of predicting value. Lastly, to Pegasus's comment, I don't know if you made your comment knowing I had purchased the helmet (because I did share it on Instagram), if so I would push back on the assertion that I'd offer a helmet and not disclose any changes I made to it. I make it clear when I alter a helmet, even when adding something as innocuous as a previously-missing nape strap. Alright, hopping off my soapbox now.

Sincerely,

Grant

Not that anyone should care about my opinion, but I think the $1800 selling price is a lot closer to true market value than the $800 amount discussed.

Here's hoping that a nice Ace of Spades stencil is hidden under the blue paint.

Grant,

My comment was not aimed at you. I didn't know who won; nor do I have Instagram. I have purchased from you before tho; I have a sweet camo M1917A1; thank you.

I would also agree some of the prices have gone up on items. M1 Helmet Depot did just sell one at 2500. And oddly enough a decent used Hawley Fix Bail combo just sold for the low $381.00 prices can be fickle.

Looking forward to seeing what it looks like when you get it cleaned off Grant. Glad to know you won it, we know it will be shared.

Value is subjective. I do not think Grant G went off the deep end here with his price.

I believe I paid $1,750 for my D Loop that was painted gold. It had one strap left and a NON AB liner.

I personally believe that D Loops are over valued.

They dont seem to be all that rare as they pop up time to time on ebay.

Many members have one or more in their collection.

JKash seemed to have a never ending supply (that was sarcasm in case you were taking my comment seriously) ; )

Just like Inland AB liners are over valued.

They really arent all that rare.

I had 3 in my collection at one time or another.

Anyway that is just my 2 cents.

Nice helmet GrantG. Good luck with the Goof Off!

Grant, I was actually using your D-Bail that you sold on your site as a reference to a price range since these don't come around often, I think I may have undershot my estimate so my apologies.

Please post photos of the shell if you manage to remove the blue paint!

Grant, I believe you overpaid, but that's me. I have overpaid for helmets myself, it is the nature of the beast. Others think it was a fair price, so I may be wrong. In the end, it is a legit D-loop. Enjoy it and hopefully your removal of the paint is successful.

  • 1 month later...

I wanted to let you guys know to no longer expect paint removal photos (not from myself anyways). I placed the helmet for sale on my site with the intentions of pulling it when I had the time to do the restoration work, but it ended up selling just a couple days later.
