Red Devil Posted October 30, 2018 Share #1 Posted October 30, 2018 Hi everyone, I would like to share recent find. It's an interesting sword with faint etching but I cannot discern a maker or acceptance mark. Faint "US" etching is present. The handle is a bit worn. Can anyone identify it as an import or US-produced model by chance? The scabbard is most interesting to me though. Sharkskin covering and fittings of a different shape than I've seen on similar examples. The brass may have been polished at some point, and all parts are marked "72." The skin itself is in nice shape with more wear on the side that would be closest to the body. All feedback always most welcomed!

sundance Posted October 30, 2018 Share #3 Posted October 30, 2018 Beautiful sword and an interesting scabbard. Is there a mark on the bottom of the guard between the blade and the quillion?
Horseclover Posted October 30, 2018 Share #4 Posted October 30, 2018 It is the type of scabbard found on the Hortsmann marked "Stockton Blues" compilations of naval blades with a brass grip and hilt. See Flayderman/Mowbray Medicus notes. It is very possible the scabbard was married after the fact. The differences in condition between the two definitely looks to be the case. Are there any retailer marks? The blade etch is very worn. Cheers GC
Red Devil Posted October 30, 2018 Author Share #5 Posted October 30, 2018 Thank you both for the comments. I too have noticed the difference in blade and scabbard condition. There are no maker marks that I can discern under the guard. I will try to go over the blade tonight with a glass to look closer. Unfortunately there is no history to trace with this locally. Thank you for the lead on the scabbard!

These plain angular scabbard fittings are generally seen on Horstmann products and I think they are one of their specialty castings. I also noticed that the sharkskin (shagreen) on the grip is slightly different that the sharkskin on the scabbard.
