beerdragon54 Posted October 27, 2018 Share #1 Posted October 27, 2018 Picked this up today at the Gettysburg show. Is she wearing her man’s uniform? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Wake1941 Posted October 27, 2018 Share #2 Posted October 27, 2018 I would assume thats a mens uniform. To my knowledge I dont believe that women could enlist at that time in the marines
warguy Posted October 27, 2018 Share #3 Posted October 27, 2018 Women Marines started in WWI. This is not a photo of one however. They wore skirts. I would say she is definitely wearing a brothers or sweethearts uniform. Neat image.
Brig Posted October 27, 2018 Share #4 Posted October 27, 2018 Easy way to tell a woman's top...buttons are always on the opposite side of a man's. Most likely wearing her sweetheart's uniform. I've always been fond of these types of photos, they were very popular in Germany during WWI and WWII, but much harder to find US versions. The couple I have, the only uniform items the girls are wearing are the covers. Which still holds true today, girls love to wear our hats for some reason

themick Posted October 29, 2018 Share #6 Posted October 29, 2018 Pre-WWI, given the cap and rounded type buttons on the blouse. Steve
Brig Posted October 29, 2018 Share #7 Posted October 29, 2018 Cap remained in use until the mid-1920s, so could very well be anytime up until the 1920 pattern emblems started seeing use

Brig Posted October 30, 2018 Share #9 Posted October 30, 2018 Looks to me like the brim is bent and the chinstrap is sitting high, can see a gap there
themick Posted October 30, 2018 Share #10 Posted October 30, 2018 Still, those rounded type buttons were gone before WWI, right? I honestly could be wrong about that, but I've never seen a WWI attributed blouse with them. Steve
Brig Posted October 30, 2018 Share #11 Posted October 30, 2018 Well it's a Corporal with a GCM before 1920, so he would have likely continued to wear his pre-war uniform until the transition. Very common in those days. Can of course be a pre-war image, but I don't think we can rule out the war years either
Dirk Posted October 30, 2018 Share #12 Posted October 30, 2018 I'll go pre-war given those buttons.
