chris3bs Posted October 23, 2018 Share #1 Posted October 23, 2018 Found Named WW2 era Air Medal yesterday which had incribed R C Dustin. Not official IMO. However I did not purchase it because of the difficulty of the RC. The closest I found was Richard Charles Dustin. From New York. Enlisted in Atlanta and may have been a Warrant Officer. Is there a possibility he could have earned it? Thanks Chris
Jumpin Jack Posted October 23, 2018 Share #2 Posted October 23, 2018 There were a number of Warrant Officers on flight status during WWII. I have examples of Glider Pilots and Service Pilots. Jack
Allan H. Posted October 23, 2018 Share #3 Posted October 23, 2018 A couple of thoughts here- first, even though the medal is WWII vintage, it could have been issued through the Vietnam period. In Vietnam, award of the Air Medal was rather common as the concept of using helicopters to move troops was widespread. My second thought is that if the recipient was a warrant officer. He could have been a helicopter pilot. Most of the pilots in Vietnam were WO's. Allan
Allan H. Posted October 23, 2018 Share #4 Posted October 23, 2018 Jack, to your point, they would have been FLIGHT OFFICERS in WWII, rather than Warrant Officers and would have wore the FO rank rather than WO rank. After WWII, FOs transitioned to WO rank. Allan
chris3bs Posted October 23, 2018 Author Share #5 Posted October 23, 2018 Thank You..Working on abbreviations of a person's name is difficult. I found this particular name in the ww2 enlistment site. I wished I had taken a picture of it in its case.. It also had A.C. below the name which made me think WW2.
Allan H. Posted October 23, 2018 Share #6 Posted October 23, 2018 A.C. below the name would absolutely make it a WWII issued medal. Allan
KASTAUFFER Posted October 23, 2018 Share #7 Posted October 23, 2018 Did it have his Rank engraved on it as well? RANK NAME AC It should have been hand engraved. If it just had his name and AC, it would not have been official engraving. Kurt
chris3bs Posted October 23, 2018 Author Share #8 Posted October 23, 2018 No. Nothing other his name and the A.C. I was kinda saddened. But one thing - my first seeing of an engraved Air Medal. That I was not expecting. They also had $90.00 on it and the engraving could have been somewhat better..
KASTAUFFER Posted October 23, 2018 Share #9 Posted October 23, 2018 Here is a thread with lots of examples of what an officially named AAF AM or DFC should look like: http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/10926-wwii-officially-named-aaf-dfcs-and-air-medals-to-pows/
