Need Help ID Soldiers Unit - TinType

I'm doing this for a friend and I'm using his images. I do not have the tintype in my possession. The buckle is obviously US and there is a number 6 on the shako's hat badge. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you.

If I recall the New York National Guard units wore similar uniforms, however they typically wore SNY belt plates.

To me the shako emblem looks very similar to this one which was described as a 1850's 7th Artillery Regimental Shako, with the exception that yours is numbered 6.

My first thought was NY as well.

 

I would also add that the image post dates the Civil War.

So this will be the 6th New York Artillery not the 6th U.S. Artillery?

Is the image in the OP the original picture?...If so it's clearly a reverse negative, as indicated by the backwards "US" on his buckle and "6" on his shako...Bodes

Most tintypes are mirror images. There were 19th century cameras that used internal mirrors to produce a true image, but they weren't very common.
