M1Garandy Posted October 16, 2018 Share #2 Posted October 16, 2018 I've not seen the type in your first picture with the snap hooks. I did post some pics of a couple of mine here: http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/278263-case-carrying-m42-for-the-m15-tripod-for-the-m49-observation-telescope/
cwbuff Posted October 16, 2018 Author Share #3 Posted October 16, 2018 I think the one I have with the snap hooks is very early. I suspect they abandoned this design for something cheaper to make. It is clear that these carrying cases were made in much more variety than one would surmise from the field manuals. I'm wondering if the canvas tipped version is earlier or later than the leather tipped versions?
ccyooper Posted October 17, 2018 Share #4 Posted October 17, 2018 I'll have to go thru my various TM's, etc., but the leather tipped ones precede the cloth tip variety if I recall correctly. I believe the early ones that I have seen have a leather strap. My TM's are boxed up so it may take awhile, but I do not recall an early case with the snap links for straps.
