CombatEng44 Posted October 15, 2018 Share #1 Posted October 15, 2018 I picked up a few leather rifle scabbards while in Montana last week and I'm not sure what rifle one is for. Markings are: Rock Island Arsenal ?90? E.H.S. other side has: E 48 Looks about the size for a carbine but no metal "cutout" for the receiver. I saw one on a past Rock Island auction site that was on a U.S. Army 1904 McClellan saddle rig. It is exactly like that one but no real details were given as to the rifle used. Sorry for no pics but maybe someone might know without them? Thanks! Steve
Keith Posted October 15, 2018 Share #2 Posted October 15, 2018 Most likely for the 1903 Springfield??
hbtcoveralls Posted October 15, 2018 Share #3 Posted October 15, 2018 A photo would help. There were scabbards for krags and for 1903s yours is probably for an 03 The E 48 marking is a troop marking (E troop, trooper number 48) Tom Bowers
CombatEng44 Posted October 15, 2018 Author Share #4 Posted October 15, 2018 Thanks! That gave me place to start searching and I THINK I found it in another thread. (The 1903 was much different). Posted 03 November 2011 - 10:41 AM It is the first model Krag cabine scabbard Model 1896. It is the first of the full length cavalry carbine scabbards. It was the standard issue scabbard with the M1896 McClellan saddle during the Spanish American War.It is a fairly rare scabbard and looks to be in very nice condition. Mine has both straps but different buckets(not rollers) and the barrel tip is sewn shut. Very nice condition. Since I don't have a Krag this may be headed to the SOS. I'll TRY to post a photo. Thanks again.

CombatEng44 Posted November 2, 2018 Author Share #6 Posted November 2, 2018 Appears that the scabbard is for the military '95 Winchester Carbine. Thanks to all.
