USMC Jump Wings Question

 Share

Recommended Posts

I recently purchased a Korean War Marines Vandegrift jacket from a flea market. The jacket had the following ribbons: Navy/Marine Corpd Medal, Good Conduct Medal, gold life saving award, National Defense Service Medal, Korean War Campaign Medal, South Korean Presidential Unit Citation. The jacket is unnamed to Sergeant with no hash marks. The jacket had a pair of Navy/Marine Corps gold jump wings (pin back). My question is, what year did the Marines first issue this style of jump wings?, and would there have been a particular Marine Corps Airbourne Unit serving in Korea during the war? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The gold pinback wings were issued in WWII to parachute riggers, not parachutists, however some Paramarines opted to wear them instead of the Army style

There were no Marine parachutist units in existence during Korea. Gold wings weren't officially authorized for parachutists until 1963
