When did officers screw back ranks start showing up?

Early 1950s or earlier?

 

Info on the interwebs is scant in trying to definitively pinpoint a date they started appearing

 

I've only seen one pair of coffin style 1st LT screw backs that were said to be 1930s era but no write ups anywhere that gives a timeline or anything

Those would be rare right, not common, the pin backs and later clutch backs are the norm.
