David B Posted October 5, 2018 Share #1 Posted October 5, 2018 Hi guys, A good friend of mine has given me these rather interesting wings. They are approx 30' x 11' and are made from wood. There's remnants of an old sticker to the reverse. Does anyone know if these were commercially available or locally produced? I presume they would be on display in an office. triplecanopy Posted October 5, 2018 Share #2 Posted October 5, 2018 Before Mount Pinatubo erupted (1990?) there was a shop in Angeles City near Clark Air Base in the Philippines that made these plaques out of Mahogany or Monkey Pod wood. I do not know if they are still in business, but I have occasionally seen plaques like these on eBay. When I was over that way, we had plaques made as departing gifts. They did beautiful work as most are made from one piece of wood.

huntssurplus Posted October 5, 2018 Share #4 Posted October 5, 2018 I have one of these wings as well. I bought it off of eBay. Great thing for a display or to hang up in a war room!Hunt
pfrost Posted October 5, 2018 Share #5 Posted October 5, 2018 Philippine made I suspect. I don't know if they were only made in the Philippines but I do recall seeing them when I was a kid at the various bases around the world (we were at Rota and Subic Bay). You could get them mail order from the post exchanges
David B Posted October 5, 2018 Author Share #6 Posted October 5, 2018 Thanks so much for the help guys, I really appreciate it! So likely to be Filipino and maybe something to do with Clark Air base, that's good enough for me. Now to find room on a wall for it, if I'm "allowed" of course ;-) Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk
pfrost Posted October 5, 2018 Share #7 Posted October 5, 2018 They don't have to be associated with Clark AFB. You can get them off line right now. But they are pretty cool. https://www.plaquesandpatches.com/wooden-wings/

I'm hoping the one I have has a bit of age to it rather than be modern made, it certainly looks like it could be vintage. pfrost Posted October 5, 2018 Share #9 Posted October 5, 2018 From what I remember about the Philippines, they could easily give it as much "vintage age" as you would possibly want. My mom has an anatomically correct rabbit carving from the Philippines. I used to collect the spears and arrows used by the Negritos, when we lived there. David B Posted October 5, 2018 Author Share #10 Posted October 5, 2018 Ah well, whatever the age, it was a gift and I love it. On the wall it goes :-) Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk
