willi27 Posted October 2, 2018 Share #1 Posted October 2, 2018 Good morning to everyone, I've found this strange mess tin/meat can very similar to model 1932 but round. It is marked US on the handle. In the photo a comparison between this (below) and the standard M1932 (above). Many thanks in advance.

willi27 Posted October 3, 2018 Author Share #5 Posted October 3, 2018 Hell again, I took some more detailed photos, but I can't find other markings but the "U.S." on the handle. I found on a French forum that another mess tin of this kind was found in Belgium in a prisoner camp, but nothing more... Thanks for your reply. phantomfixer Posted October 3, 2018 Share #6 Posted October 3, 2018 The closest kit I found was the Spanish American war mess kit there is one on ebay...it is round, but more similar to the WWI M1910 style mess kit
willi27 Posted October 4, 2018 Author Share #7 Posted October 4, 2018 I made a research on some French forums (if you google "gamelle americaine ronde ww2" you'll find a discussion on the topic) and here's what I found: -the US had some mess tins made by the Belgians, most of them were marked with producer followed by "Belgium" or "made in Belgium", but unmarked mess tins (so marked only with ""U.S.") were not uncommon at all. For example Tournaux was one of these producers. -The style of the US marking on the Belgian-manufactured mess tins is different from the USA-made ones: the former has a sort of "Times-New-Roman" style and thicker lines while the latter has a sort of "Calibri" style and thinner lines. -A collector on the French forum has stated that he himself had found a mess tin like mine in a ex-POW camp in Belgium. Putting these three clues together I would say that at least my mess tin was produced in Belgium for the US Army, between 1944 and 1945. Have you got some more information about Belgian mess tin productions for the US? Thank you in advance
Old Marine Posted October 5, 2018 Share #8 Posted October 5, 2018 There is a great post about Operation Dragoon and the Champagne Campaign Posted by forum member Dogface44. I was reading through that post and I saw this photo. Take a look at the round mess kit that the soldier is washing it looks a lot like the one posted here. I would have never given that round mess tin a second though if you hadn't posted yours here. I think the one in the photo is like the one you posted. This forum is amazing. http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/196852-operation-dragoon-and-the-champagne-campaign/?hl=%2Boperation+%2Bdragoon+%2Bchampagne Dogface, I hope you don't mind me reposting your photo here.
