Help id'ing these ships

Please help me to ID as many of these as possible. These were all taken from the USS Shaw ca 1940. thanks in advance. Dave

The carrier is either the Lexington or Saratoga, the destroyer looks like a Mahan class destroyer, same class as the Shaw.

Those are cruisers. Looks like a late 1930's Scouting Force out of either San Diego or Pearl Harbor. They often operated/exercised around Lahaina Roads off of Maui.

I thought the big ones were cruisers. I have one photo where I can see the number on the ship and it's 374. That I tied to the USS Tucker DD 374; Is it possible one of the cruisers is the Indianapolis? These are definitely late 30s and I have the equator crossing summons at 20 August 1938.

The Tucker was a Mahan class destroyer. The larger ship is not the Indianapolis. Not sure what it is without hitting the books. Almost looks like the New York, Texas, or Arkansas (battleships), but I'd have to dig a little.

Good guess, but New York and Texas had their masts modernized by the time that DD was built. I would say it's a Florida-class, probably Utah ex-BB31.

I would say the CV is probably Lexington; Saratoga had stripe painted on the stack to differentiate between the two.

What cruiser? I see no cruiser in any of the photos.

My error Steve,

 

RC and Thor are correct.

 

I think that is the USS UTAH. The 'naked' main battery turrets were throwing me off following her metamorphosis as a target ship as she is now minus all her main armament, her main turrets have been emptied of their 12"/45 rifles per the London disarmament treaty of 1930. She also has no gun directors nor crows nest on the aft mast.

Any way to find out what Desron the Shaw was attached to in 1940 might give you some ideas

I think she was in DESRON 3 - at least she was in 1941.
