Scott C. Posted September 22, 2018 Share #1 Posted September 22, 2018 I'm used to seeing son-in-service pins with a red border, white center, and blue star(s). Can anyone shed light on the color combination on the pin below? Thanks.
cutiger83 Posted September 22, 2018 Share #2 Posted September 22, 2018 This looks like a patriotic pin not a son in service pin. What is on the bottom of the pin? Kat
Mr.Jerry Posted September 24, 2018 Share #3 Posted September 24, 2018 It's a son in service pin but in a varied color configuration to avoid the patent restrictions.
Scott C. Posted October 3, 2018 Author Share #4 Posted October 3, 2018 It's a son in service pin but in a varied color configuration to avoid the patent restrictions. Thanks for the replies. So the usual red border surrounding a white field with a blue star (or gold for KIA) was patented? Is there more info on this patent? The 'service flag' wiki article says use of the design was via government license. The complete pin is posted below.
Mr.Jerry Posted October 3, 2018 Share #5 Posted October 3, 2018 Yes, the original patent was granted on Nov 6th 1917 by Captain Queisser. I show a copy of the patent (and others) in my upcoming book.
