vbary Posted September 15, 2018 Share #1 Posted September 15, 2018 In clearing out a family member's estate 20 years ago I found this rear sight. The decedent was a tool and die maker for Singer in Elizabeth, NJ, which I believe manufactured a 37 mm gun during WW II. The only markings on the sight are (1) "H.S." on the tab at the rear of the sight, and (2) "C9812" on the rear of the elevation mechanism. Can anyone identify this from the photos? Does it have a dollar value to militaria collectors and what might that be?
268th C.A. Posted September 15, 2018 Share #2 Posted September 15, 2018 Looks too me like a 1903 Springfield sight
vbary Posted September 15, 2018 Author Share #3 Posted September 15, 2018 I had one response opining that it is from an 03 Springfield. My bad, I should have given the dimensions and weight. The base is 8"X1 1/8" and stands 2/3" high. The elevation portion of the sight sits 4 3/4" above the base Weight is nearly one pound. Far too large and heavy for a rifle. B24AT6 Posted September 22, 2018 Share #4 Posted September 22, 2018 I am pretty sure it is for one of the water cooled 50 cal's. H.S. would be the mark for Highstandard one of the contractors for 50 BMG's.
vbary Posted September 22, 2018 Author Share #5 Posted September 22, 2018 Thanks, most promising response so far.
vbary Posted September 22, 2018 Author Share #6 Posted September 22, 2018 Kudos to B24AT6. A review of BMG Parts Co. identifies this as the rear sight for a 1917A1 water cooled .50 caliber Browning machine gun.
