David Minton Posted September 11, 2018 Share #2 Posted September 11, 2018 The first rating is a US Coast Guard Aviation Survival Technician. I do not believe this rating existing in the US Navy. Stars above the Chief rating indicate rate above Chief Petty Officer, which is an E7. One star denotes a Senior Chief Petty Officer (E8), two stars denote a Master Chief Petty Officer (E9), while three stars denotes Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (E9). I'm not familiar with the style of the third rating. The rating is Construction Mechanic, which I believe was established in 1948.

MastersMate Posted September 11, 2018 Share #4 Posted September 11, 2018 The AST is a CG specific rating. a combining of the Aviation Ordnance and Parachute riggers ratings back about 1969sh. If the material is a cotton twill, that rating badge would be a 1969sh to 1976 vintage, worn on the white USN style uniforms before the change to the current style.. If it is a synthetic Cert. Navy Twill it would be post 1990s when the white dinner dress jacket was OKd..
sigsaye Posted September 12, 2018 Share #5 Posted September 12, 2018 Just to be sure, the 2 Navy rates, are both CB rates, which were created in 1948. The Master Chief Rate was not created until 1958.

sigsaye Posted September 14, 2018 Share #7 Posted September 14, 2018 Are you familiar with that style of Construction Mechanic? Was it it an unofficial CB style? The Green one? In the Early Days (WW2), CBS were directly attached to Marine units to act as their Engineers. These WW2 CB units were issued Marine Uniforms. Understand, the Mythology that exists with Marine uniforms and insignia, did not exist at that time. That came later. This may possibly be something whipped up by makers at the time, assuming the trend would continue. As you can see, its never been used, but is within 1948 specs. I love it. Its all good
