avigo Posted September 5, 2018 Share #1 Posted September 5, 2018 I want to put a "Kilroy was here" sticker on my truck. There are so many variations. Is there an authentic image out there of a real, WWII period "Kilroy was here" graffiti? Just curious was a real one looked like. Thanks!
R. Watkins Posted September 5, 2018 Share #2 Posted September 5, 2018 To the best of my knowledge the 'Kilroy' image was never copyrighted at any time during , or after, the war. It is also my understanding that there are a galaxy of thoughts as to exactly when and where this image first appeared. Given these factors, any given Kilroy artwork (as with unapproved group/squadron emblems) would vary according to the skills and interpretation of each individual artist, and so it comes down to a case of 'dealers choice'...pick an image that you like and go with it! Ok cool, thanks! That's sort of what I figured. I know the origins are hazy. Wasn't sure if anybody out there had an original piece of WWII trench art or something we knew was from the 1940s that had the cartoon on it. R. Watkins Posted September 6, 2018 Share #6 Posted September 6, 2018 For anyone who might not have seen it, here's the link (I hope) to a pretty good article on this subject. It contains nine of the most popular 'legends' pertaining to the origins of this iconic image. http://www.kilroywashere.org/001-Pages/01-0KilroyLegends.html
