RememberThe5thESB Posted July 31, 2021 Author Share #27 Posted July 31, 2021 Bringing this back up. Found while looking through his belongings, can anyone ID the unit at the CP, and the unit patch. I still need to go get a better copy of his discharge papers to figure that all out. Thanks.Sent from my SM-J327V using Tapatalk
CavalryCombatant Posted July 31, 2021 Share #28 Posted July 31, 2021 Unit patch appears to be the 7th Infantry division from what I can tell, I see it in three of the pictures. I also rotated the photos for you (mods feel free to remove if it takes up too much space) Hope you can find out more about your grandfather! Rakkasan187 Posted July 31, 2021 Share #29 Posted July 31, 2021 Definitely 7th Infantry Division.. My father's unit while in Korea.. He was with Division HQs. I seem to recall though that he has 31st Infantry Crests with his other decorations.. I will have to ask him again about the 31st connection.. The CP sign is 2nd Battalion 31st Infantry Regiment "Polar Bears" Their unit crests are Polar Bears and the motto Pro Patria means: For Country Great photos.. I'm taking a wild guess but maybe the pictures were taken at Fort Ord in California... Best regards stay safe Leigh

There's images of a ship, with the name "Golden Bear", a training ship from California State University Maritime Academy. Other than that, there's a few images that indicate to me he was at Camp Casey. Which definitely throws me off, especially with what he told me about his service.Sent from my SM-J327V using Tapatalk
RememberThe5thESB Posted July 31, 2021 Author Share #31 Posted July 31, 2021 These are the other photos I have. The first image seems to have buildings like that at Fort Ord, the other few look like Camp Casey from pictures I found. And the last photo isn't a clear sign it was Camp Casey, but it was definitely taken in Korea. Sent from my SM-J327V using Tapatalk

patches Posted August 1, 2021 Share #33 Posted August 1, 2021 This is an M46 Patton Tank, it was largely replaced by the mid 50s within the U.S. Army by the M47 Patton Tank, and a short time later by the M48 Patton Tank. However the M47 Tank was retained for use in the PENTOMIC Infantry Battle Group as a Assault Gun Platoon in the Battle Group Combat Support Company. By the unit sign, your Grandfather was in this unit after 1963 it seems as the PENTOMIC Battle Groups are reorganized as Battalions now, this under a new reorganization, called REORGANIZATION OBJECTIVE ARMY DIVISION or as its familiarly known as ROAD, pronounced as RO-AD. It would seem now he was in the RECON Platoon of the 2nd Battalion 31st Infantry, a unit found at this time in the Headquarters Headquarters Company of an infabtry battalion, and at this time should of included the old M47 Tanks, this RECON Platoon no doubt also having Jeeps, and by 1963 possibly the new M113 Armored Personnel Carrier. So its most unusual that this unit has M46 Patton Tanks still, most unusual, perhaps this M46 Patton Tank is what is called a Monument Tank??? A Monument Tank being an obsolete tank that's parked on a concrete pedestal or slab, or just on the grass for display, and his unit in 1963 did indeed use the M47 Patton Tank?
