917601 Posted August 14, 2018 Share #1 Posted August 14, 2018 Noticed few Ordnance postings, here is another recent find, for the ammo buffs. It is a seperate loaded round, projo loaded (65 lbs) then the huge case ( 75 lbs). Stands about 4 ft tall. For the tankers, look up the M103, fielded 1956 to 1974, interesting history. The crew had two loaders, one loaded the shell, the other the case. Notice the size next to the IBM ( itty bitty Marine).
917601 Posted August 14, 2018 Author Share #2 Posted August 14, 2018 Interestingly, the 120mm gun in the M103 heavy tank was adapted from the WW2 120mm AA Stratosphere cannon. The 120mm AA round reached 60,000 ft. Early 1940's-1960.This is a lot of gun to stick in a turret. "The 120 mm Gun M1 is the United States Army's standard super-heavy anti-aircraft gun, complementing the smaller and more mobile M2 90 mm gun in service. Its maximum altitude was about 60,000 ft (18,000 m), which earned it the nickname stratosphere gun."
