iron bender Posted August 11, 2018 Share #1 Posted August 11, 2018 I've collected WW2 patches for twenty years. I have a stead fast rule that I will not spend more than $400 on a patch. I'll wait forever to find what I'm looking for to not spend post $400. Now a patch has arrived on ebay that I'm positive will break this barrier by a lot. I really want this one piece of history, as it will help me come close to completing a specific collection. I wouldn't think this patch to be rare, but looking at one specific dealer's site, this patch sold and was POR (price on request). Money's not an issue at present. Do I break with my brain and try to get it, or should I let it slide, and continue to hope I'll get lucky at a show or locally? Each person has a different threshold they are willing to meet to find their hobby fun. If it is worth that much to you, then go for it. When, or if, you find another at a bargain price, you can always sell the "$400+" patch to recoup your expenditure. Good luck! I'm currently well off due to end of fiscal year and "bonus" time. It would be hard to feed this patch to my wife and kids or pay our mortgage with a patch. Just wanting to complete one specific area of my collection. One concern I have on a patch as this, once you're the winning bidder, you obviously wanted it more than anyone else. It has 15 bidders +. What separates the hunter from the hoarder ( long story short...not much). I like most have a limit on what I can spend. An unlimited amount equates to you hunting with a large caliber full auto weapon. You can afford to send rounds down range. I hunt with a bow and arrow and if funds are tight I pack a mean spear. It may sound like we are different, but we are not. We both hunt and a part of the thrill of the hunt is getting what we are looking for on our terms. If throwing a few extra bucks at an item to complete a collection works for you...then good for you, but consider this. If you do that, if you violate the terms and conditions of the hunt you yourself set in place. The terms you have followed all this time. What satisfaction will you truly have with your last shot? What will you hunt for after that. Only you know the answer. You asked the group because the answer troubles you. I don't always get what I am hunting, but I always hunt. Hunting is not a sure thing. iron bender Posted August 11, 2018 Author Share #7 Posted August 11, 2018 I'm also a deer/ turkey/ bird hunter. Know where you're coming from. I also use a bow (Tomahawk Long Bow). I've saved plenty of animals to let them grow. Unfortunately I've also seen my bag in my neighbor's house on the wall many times. Animals tend to move about and get sniped by folks who don't have your concern at heart. I've officially placed my bid on said patch at my max and I'm letting the coyotes have it. P-59A Posted August 11, 2018 Share #8 Posted August 11, 2018 . Throwing lots of rounds down range is a numbers game. Hunting is chess game. It takes equal parts of skill, knowledge and a little luck. Some of my best finds were my best negotiations. Negotiation is the skill, knowledge is knowing everything about my hunt and luck is being at the right place at the right time with a plan. Like I said I don't always get what I am hunting for. I know when to walk away and I know when to circle back and try another plan. I love the hunt. If I miss out on one I know another one will be around in short order. I know because I am always hunting. Sitting at home doing nothing gains me nothing. I have to look for my game. You know what I am saying. If I can't make a clean kill I don't take the shot. I owe it to myself and the game that I follow my rules. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

But I think about it and usually decide aganst it. my thoughts. It is a waiting game. I know I will never have it all. I guess thats what also makes it a hobby. Once you have the collection, your looking for something else.. Like stated its you decision and your money. Is there something else you want for $400. ?? Its a thought process...Good Luck! Are you going to stop collecting once you get this one patch? Or move on to a different set of patches? You might never have another chance you might never see one again. Don't stress so much, have fun. Get your scope out and do some sniping. I to am curious as to what the patch might be. As far as bidding high and recouping your money later, that is a gamble and not guaranteed. Keep in mind especially with auctions the reason you "won" the item is that you volunteered to spend more money on it than anyone else on the world wide web at that moment. Here's my thoughts on the subject: Every collector experiences the joy and thrill of the hunt. I don't think we'd collect things if we didn't. If you have a collection, then you hoard. So sorry, but as collectors, we are all "hoarders". How one goes about it may make him a spendthrift or a skinflint. The difference between the two is a matter of personal opinion. Some collectors are willing and able to be patient and others are not. It sounds like to me, that you've waited a long time to obtain this patch and it won't actually complete the collection but it will get you closer to your goal of completing it. So, you aren't going to quit hunting and hoarding if you buy it. Are you willing to wait the same amount of time for it to show up again? Do you think it will be even more rare and more expensive the next time it shows up or less so? I'm sure if you actually were hunting for that patch twenty years ago it would have been obtainable for less than $400. Today, however, you are competing with a lot more "hunters" that have greatly improved ammo, weapons, knowledge and skill thanks to available resources like this forum. Spendthrifts and skinflints will determine who actually goes home with the "bag". Here's a method of keeping your principles intact (I can't help you with your morality). If you have a spending limit on an individual patch, then you likely have a monthly, annual, or total spending limit on your collection or hobbies in general. So, perhaps you should think about averaging the cost of the total items (including this patch) in your collection over the monthly, annual or total amount spent on your collection to determine whether or not you are actually violating your personal rules of the hunt. It's kind of like dollar cost averaging in retrospect if you will. Spending a little more on one particular piece for the collection makes finding that occasional great deal on another piece even sweeter. So Im not too disappointed for a patch I would think would be way more common, but apparently can sell for a bunch of money. Anyhow, once I have in hand Ill post a pic for review when I get home. I have two more to go, but for some suspicion, I think there may be one or two more that just arent out there yet. Well see. Thanks so much for all the input!
