Gentlemen:

I am always interested in images showing the use of blades by US military personnel, so when I ran across this one it caught my eye. This African American pilot appears to be carrying a PAL RH-36 6 inch sheath knife. It looks like he has an M3 style shoulder holster strapped around his waist on which strap he has mounted his blade. I wish the photographer had stepped back just a bit so we could get a full view of the knife but, of course, that was not his intent.

There were only a few combat squadrons during WW2 which were composed of African American pilots. The 332nd Fighter Group had four such squadrons, so I am guessing that this wounded aviator is a member of that Group.
