I use to see these a lot around the area here.

 

Was my understanding they were a early type of cooler for Milk,cream,ice cream.

 

We had lots of dairy farms here at one time.

I think they were mostly used on the civilian side, but military could of used them also, remember ice cream being dipped out of one when I was a kid..

It almost looks like a 1970s-1980s or so Canadian Army thermos carrier/insulator. Seems to be about the right size too.

Found a very similar one in a display of antique farm equipment in a local museum, and the commercial logo on it was definitely non-GI; so I guess it's strictly a civilian item, though it'll still look good in my MBT with jerry cans, mermite, and assorted other gear.
