otter42 Posted July 19, 2018 Share #1 Posted July 19, 2018 Picked these up today. You can see the original maker and Sterling, then a new Sterling stamp applied over the original. The Navigator sheild Is applied over the original. Is this common, I had never seen this done before, but I'm no expert.

bobgee Posted July 19, 2018 Share #3 Posted July 19, 2018 Likely a 1947 era conversion piece made quickly to provide the new Nav wing badge utilizing present stock/ My 2-cents. Bobgee
pfrost Posted July 19, 2018 Share #4 Posted July 19, 2018 That is a really cool wing. It looks to me that they restruck an AMCRAFT pilot wing with a new excised sterling mark (you can see the remnants of the original hallmark) before adding the new navigator device. I wonder why they went to all that trouble? Very interesting.
otter42 Posted July 19, 2018 Author Share #5 Posted July 19, 2018 Thanks for the input. I wondered why they would stamp over the maker mark too. Maybe had to do it because of altering the original piece. Do you think these were just pilot wings?
Steve L Posted July 20, 2018 Share #6 Posted July 20, 2018 otter42, Not common at all, 1st one I've seen; and I agree with Bobgee's, Costa's and Patrick's assessments. Thanks for sharing!! Steve
