world war I nerd Posted July 18, 2018 Share #1 Posted July 18, 2018 Picked this up recently hoping it's WW I, but I don't really know the difference between WW I and WW II Navy uniforms. Anyway, it's a group of unidentified sailors pointing out the main attribute of "Jean's Place". Maybe the experts can opine … WW I or WW II? Thanks for looking, World War I Nerd ... jweitkamp Posted July 18, 2018 Share #4 Posted July 18, 2018 The sailor in the middle has his rate sewn very low on this sleeve- WW1 or early 20's I reckon.
world war I nerd Posted July 19, 2018 Author Share #5 Posted July 19, 2018 Thank you gentlemen. A lot of the time, the period font styles and graphics will give you some hints as to the date, but this one doesn't really have too many clues (aside from the uniforms & insignia). So we're talking what - 1916-ish, to say, mid 20's; give or take 5 years?

Salvage Sailor Posted July 19, 2018 Share #7 Posted July 19, 2018 The sign on the lower right is en Espanol Mexican liberty port?
Salvage Sailor Posted July 20, 2018 Share #8 Posted July 20, 2018 Should have noticed the 'Pereira' on the sign above them the first time around......... Pereira Barreto is a municipality in the state of São Paulo in Brazil. Most likely a liberty port call during prohibition in the 1920's
world war I nerd Posted July 20, 2018 Author Share #9 Posted July 20, 2018 Salvage Sailor, thanks for your knowledge regarding the Navy's South American ports of call. Never would have guessed that photo was taken in Brazil. If Brazil, would not the sign be in Portuguese?
Salvage Sailor Posted July 20, 2018 Share #10 Posted July 20, 2018 Aye, Portugese not Spanish I was looking at the second closeup photo and didn't note the first one which tells the tale. The sign on the window is about postage stamps and postcards but the swabbies are thirsty.....
72psb Posted July 21, 2018 Share #11 Posted July 21, 2018 The 2 sailors on the left have their "fixin's" in their chest pockets.
