mortaydc60 Posted July 18, 2018 Share #1 Posted July 18, 2018 Today saw new listing of bullion patches from an old collection being offer for sale on eBay by a well respected seller. Received an email from a well known collected who expressed concern about these patches. Some rare items like Greek election, bullion 63 div with tab etc. Did not notice any mention in this section but in the Real or Not section saw post by Dave K on two bullion armor patches from this group that he eliqintly and throughly explained why they were fake. Posting as warning to forum members so as not to get burned. They may look good to many so would like to know what others think and if disagree. 36-tex Posted July 18, 2018 Share #3 Posted July 18, 2018 Most are standard patches with added bullion while others have to much bullion work in my opinion. I am not a fan of any of these.

squidres Posted July 18, 2018 Share #6 Posted July 18, 2018 These are the work of a faker who moved on from making patches of old material and selling one at a time on ebay a few years back, to enhancing common patches with bullion. Seller is honest, but was duped by unsuspecting collector. I examined some of the patches at a show last weekend, and all were done by same hand. Told him, that patches did not match style of materials of theater of origin, but he obviously thinks he knows better.

tredhed2 Posted July 18, 2018 Share #8 Posted July 18, 2018 Duped by an unsuspecting collector? Some one put together a large collection of fake bullion patches thinking they were real? Ever hear of Jack Brown? He used to sell a lot of WW I patches to collectors who did NOT doubt his veracity, and got fooled. They only bought from him, because he had all these great one-of-a-kind patches. These patches had all sorts of never before seen colors, shapes, etc - a lot of his "melton" wool pieces dyes ran if they got wet. Not everything he sold was junk, which enhanced his product. I used to point him out to newbies at shows, but haven't seen him in awhile, and I quit SOS, which was the last place I saw him. There are a lot of gullible collectors still. ASMIC and this Forum do their best, but some of these dealers still have their devotees.
gomorgan Posted July 18, 2018 Share #9 Posted July 18, 2018 I like most of you have noticed these on ebay, and I'm not fan of any of them. And David I remember and knew Jack Brown very well in the old days, not sure he's still around or with us, seems last time I saw him was having health problems and didn't look well. Jack use to sell on ebay and last big offering was the mega find of USMC early rank insignias.Lots of Sgts ranks and some paid hefty prices for them. He sold under AlpineMilitary or AlpineMilitaria and one other name I don't recall. He had patches made using old materials Was selling for years even prior to the internet and often the items came throught the House of Swords Catalogs as well as some of the old fake squadron patches from England. squidres Posted July 18, 2018 Share #11 Posted July 18, 2018 He yanked them. He appreciated feedback from everyone. Sometimes seemingly great “discoveries” with good story allow honest and well meaning people to push proverbial “I believe button”

Used to always be set up at the same tables at the old OVMS Drawbridge shows. He would have some of the most interesting looking patches. However after looking through them for about 3 minutes or so you would say to yourself,. too good to be true,.and walk away. Was a super friendly fellow.
