MilRGRHistory Posted June 22, 2018 Share #4 Posted June 22, 2018 This is post Vietnam but not sure when this was actually worn. I havent seen pictures of this style scroll being worn by 1st Battalion, Ive only seen the fat scroll being used. Ive got a 1974 1st BN yearbook where they are wearing the fat scroll for the activation - the same scroll worn through Panama in 83. looking a vets personal photos of early Ranger days, Ive only seen the fat scroll used late 70s/early 80s as well. I have one of these as well and would certainly like to see a pic of it being worn. Mine is used too!

468abnarm Posted June 22, 2018 Share #6 Posted June 22, 2018 Do not believe that this version was ever worn by the 1st Battalion. As far as I know they went from the "fat" or "shotgun" style scroll straight to the current style being worn. Only the 2nd Battalion wore this style (design) before going to the standard one. 3rd Battalion never had a 'special" scroll design. They started with the standard design. phillock Posted June 22, 2018 Share #7 Posted June 22, 2018 Hi guys Based on Gordon Rottman's osprey book, 1st Bn 75th Rangers had this type of scroll made, however they rejected this because of connotation to 2d/75th. Do not know how many were made or if they were issued. This has all the construction traits of a mid 1970's US made unauthorized scroll. Would like to see a pic though of being worn. I would like this in my sub-collection 1974-2018 Ranger scrolls. I have been after one for a while-good to see it in the flesh. As with all Ranger scrolls there will be repo's, that were commercially made in the late 80's-90's haven't seen one but i'm sure they will be out there. doyler Posted June 22, 2018 Share #8 Posted June 22, 2018 This one posted appears to have been worn or sewn on at some point. These were made in subdued twill as well. Granted the 1st wore the shotgun banner type in both color and subdued

gomorgan Posted June 25, 2018 Share #11 Posted June 25, 2018 I remember going into Range Control office sometime after Grenada and speaking to a EOD S/Sgt. reference me clearing some items from range and he had one of these and a subdued version glued to his paper name plate on his desk, as I recall they were unused. Patch collectors note these kind of things...
doyler Posted June 25, 2018 Share #12 Posted June 25, 2018 My unused ones came out of a gunshow back in 1978-81 if I recall.Guy sold surplus. He was from Minnesota and set up at the show.Had a couple patch boards. Each patch was numbered and he would pull out the corresponding patch from shoe boxes under the table. He has stacks of these as well as others. ..cut edge SF,82ND Support,82ND Signal,101st Recondo all of the WW2 Ranger numbered Bn's and the 7-9.His older Ranger Bn's looked 60s made or patch king types. Great stuff....should have filled a couple shopping carts
Tonomachi Posted June 26, 2018 Share #13 Posted June 26, 2018 Spoke to a buddy of mine who served with the 1st Ranger Battalion, Charlie Company, in the early 1980s and he never saw anyone wearing the wider scroll. The explanation given to him as to why the 2nd Ranger Battalion wore a different larger scroll was because they had bigger heads!
