USMC NCO Sword/Saber Assistance

Hi Folks: I recently picked this USMC NCO Sword....but I don't know that much about these....The sword is missing the leather buffer between the blade and the grip...so it rattles a little. The gilt is worn and the wire on the grip is little oxidized. The blade is 32" long with Star of David on one side and "Newtel Inc. Stainless Steel" on the other. It's engraved with "United States Marines" etc. on three (3) side...both sides and top

I would like to take it part especially the pommel and put a leather buffer between the blade & grip...thus tighten it up. Or...just leave it alone (Smile)

The blade is in super shape...but it didn't come with a scabbard. I found it in a military thrift store...on US Army base....so I didn't invest much.

I'd assume 1960's or 70's...but I'm guessing...I can post better pictures.

RECOMMENDATIONS??? Thank you

I wouldn't take it apart just to replace the washer. I have made my own washers from pieces of leather and slide it down the blade. I always make sure the opening is undersized so I'll fill any gap it gets into. Sometimes it tightens things up a bit, sometimes not.

Sundance...I apprecite your comment...I ws thinking the same thing...make the leather buffer and slide it in...I've done it on a boot knife...worked great. Thanks.

  • 2 months later...

I went to cobbler and told him that I wanted to buy some scrap leather. He went in the back of the shop and came out with some scrap leather and handed it to me for free. I trimmed a piece and worked on forming the leather buffer.
