A Bag Worth Keeping

I just wanted to share pictures of a few personal items that belonged to my uncle, Lt. Worth G. Kirkman, 457st Bomb Group, 8th Air Force. Lt. Kirkman flew 35 Bombing Missions over Germany in 1944-45. He carried this bag to flight training in Florida and used it to ship home his civilian clothes along with razors. Interestingly, his father (John D. Kirkman) used this bag for the same purpose in WWI (and wrote the return address on the inside of the bag).

My uncle gave the bag to my father, who then passed it on to me. He and my father were especially close. According to my father, when my uncle was discharged from service in 1945 his first day home went to my dad's school (in uniform) to surprise him....and boy was my father impressed; it's something he never forgot.

My father mentioned several times that my uncle had a great photo album of his training and wartime experiences (i.e., damaged planes, crew), but unfortunately I was never able to see it. Anyway, the bag is a nice keepsake of his service.

Tom
