4thraiders Posted June 4, 2018 Share #1 Posted June 4, 2018 So Ive been trying to get help for the last week on figuring out why the bowie has a 1 etched on the blade near the hand handguard opposite of the side with their makers mark. The only information Ive found is that the marine raiders field etched the Bowie knives issued. Other than that I cant find another model with this etching. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Im waiting for better pictures as I have purchased t but its not here just yet.
dustin Posted June 4, 2018 Share #2 Posted June 4, 2018 You have to be careful, from your last post and this one it seems you want a Raider #18 really really bad and willing to see what you wanna see. I see nothing but a mark, I see other darkened areas just from that baby bit of the blade. I would assume the rest of the blade has consistent blemishes all over. Better pictures will certainly clarify.

Frank Trzaska Posted June 4, 2018 Share #4 Posted June 4, 2018 I thought they were made by a vibrating or electro tool so under magnification you should be able to see a series of faint dots.

Do you know what it could mean if it is indeed a 1? Like I said , waiting on better photos
doyler Posted June 5, 2018 Share #6 Posted June 5, 2018 Could be anything...maybe an assembly number.
4thraiders Posted June 5, 2018 Author Share #7 Posted June 5, 2018 Could be anything...maybe an assembly number. So its probably no more rare or worth more than an unmarked version?

Blacksmith Posted June 6, 2018 Share #9 Posted June 6, 2018 Looks like corrosion to me. There’s a mating ghost image on the brass guard, so something may have laid on it and rusted. Does not look intentional / man-made to me. Also looks like the guard has been cleaned with steel woolor similar abrasive.
