Sarge8 Posted June 4, 2018 Share #1 Posted June 4, 2018 Out for a short ride this PM and stopped at a tag sale. Not much for me but found a bunch of Coast Guard pictures from Humboldt Bay Station and a MK 1 knife. Knife and scabbard not in the best condition, but price wasn't too bad. The leather has just about all the finish gone. Should I try to treat it or leave as is. If OK to treat it, what should I use. The scabbard has some damage too. Thanks for looking. sundance Posted June 4, 2018 Share #2 Posted June 4, 2018 Nice find. I usually put some Renaissance Wax on a weathered grip. I never stop at tag sales but every time I pass one (thanks to this forum) I wonder if there is some treasure in there.
Sarge8 Posted June 4, 2018 Author Share #3 Posted June 4, 2018 Thanks, Sundance. Will the wax darken the leather?
SKIPH Posted June 4, 2018 Share #4 Posted June 4, 2018 Sarge8f- I apply brown or neutral shoe polish, buff w/ a shoe brush. It will not darken the leather. I do this w/ all my WW2 leather handled knives. Keeps them from drying out, preserves the leather, and they look fine. Done forget to lightly oil the metal on the knife, and the scabbard throat.
