mmerc20 Posted May 23, 2018 Share #1 Posted May 23, 2018 I appreciate the help I have gotten so far with IDing some unit crests but have another question. There were many smaller battalions and companies that trained at the camp during WWII and I have always wondered what crests they would have worn. We had numerous units like the 1318th Engineer Regiment, 1699th Engineer Battalion, 3533rd Ordnance Company, 19th Chemical Company and similar. If there wasn't an approved DUI (or unapproved), did they wear anything at all? The same thing goes for the shoulder patches, but that is a different topic. What would be wonderful is if someone might be willing to volunteer some time to assist our museum in building a digital database of unit insignia. We have the original camp quartermaster's log that he entered each unit as it arrives (sometimes putting a date when they left). Although not 100% complete, from what we can tell, it is very close. tredhed2 Posted May 23, 2018 Share #4 Posted May 23, 2018 For you and other newbies to the hobby, units smaller than battalions were not authorized DIs. That means no official drawings, no approval dates for drawings, no DI sample approvals, and no DIs, with the exception of pre-war HQ Companies. Not every qualified unit active during WW II had a DI authorized, either, so the soldiers in those units did not wear any. Chances are slim to none that CONUS units had unauthorized DIs. Overseas, unauthorized DIs, for a multitude of units, including a very few companies, exist. This includes units stateside for any length of time which were transferred overseas, and previously did not have one. However, all this being said, and GIs being GIs, there may have been someone who wore a patch type DI, although they were unauthorized. GIs assigned to these units may or may not have had a shoulder patch or worn one if authorized.
patches Posted May 26, 2018 Share #5 Posted May 26, 2018 What's a patch type DI you ask? These,11 pages worth, and sometimes as you'll see, even men in Regiments and or Battalions that had a duly authorized DI of their own sometimes wore them for whatever reason. http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/171731-post-the-patch-type-crest-being-worn/
