On 18 Aug 1976, US and ROK soldiers were trimming a tree on the DMZ due to its' blocking the view of UN observers into the north. Two US officers, Capt Arthur Bonifas and iLT Mark Barrett, both unarmed (a "legal requirement based on the numbers of US and ROK personnel) led the work. More than a dozen NK soldiers angrily ordered the work detail to stop, telling the detail the tree had allegedly been planted by Kim Il-Sung, the grandfather of the current president of NK. The work party ignored the NK soldiers, and then a NK army truck drove up with approx. 20 more soldiers. The work detail was again ordered to stop, and when they did not, the NK soldiers were ordered by one of their officers to attack the work detail with axes. Both Bonifas and Barrett were murdered by the NK soldiers. Most of the work detail was wounded in the assault. The two US officers' took the brunt of the attack. Adds more interest to your artifacts. Tensions were extremely high, and three days later, a well armed US and ROK work detail thoroughly trimmed the tree. The NKs stood by and glared but did nothing. It would have been more of a ‘commerative’ patch about the tree chopping incident. And yes Manay, they did.
