Hello, I recently acquired a grouping belonging to a Corpsman who landed on D-day at 18 years old.

You can check out the rest of the grouping in the helmet section.

I’m trying to get an idea of what this pack is...

I would also appreciate it if you can show a pic of one in use. I really can’t wrap my head around how this thing was worn.

Have you ever seen a picture from WWII?

Thanks, just figured out how to fold it haha

I put a field jacket in the middle to give it some width.

Really cool.

I’m more of a helmet guy... haha

Expand your horizons, young man!

Now I'm totally going to blow your mind, there is an M-1910 model as well !!

Just my 2 pence on the bag, it looks relatively unused. If it had of hit the beaches it would show more use and soiling.

Also that leather looks in amazing condition with no wear, IMHO this was not an in theatre used piece

It’s not in the worse condition but it’s definitely seen better days.

Not to mention the splatter of blood in areas the daughter has pointed out to me.

My experience with blood, other than my own, is that it eats away at canvas, cloth and the like.

Kind of a dark, dry rot spot.

Many people mistake rust spots for blood.

As you can see, these little black spots are throughout the bag. That’s what I was referring to.

Also for those who believe the bag is too clean to have seen battle, I beg to differ...

That actually looks like discoloration/staining from less-than-ideal storage, possibly caused by mold.

Not my area of expertise but, I'd have to agree. I've seen this same look on canvas items I've had. It stands out more on the OD3 than on the OD7.

The phenomenon you are showing in your post #3 is what is known as "foxing", which is believed to be caused by mold, and can be found to effect old paper (books particularly) and fabric. It is cased by storage in a damp environment and the name comes from its red-brown color.

I've heard it called "red rust" but I agree.....results of poor damp storage. See it alot down here in the humid South.

Just to be clear. This haversack never stormed the beach on dday. He was on lst46 off the coast of Utah beach which arrived on June 7. Never beached on first trip I believe. I would say poor storage over 70 years made this minty bag the way it looks. We already discussed this in your helmet post. Dont let wishful thinking cloud the reality of these items. It can confuse the reality of the item and screw someone over in the future when/if you go sell it.

Let’s be clear, this bag isn’t mint ... and I’m sure it’s seen some use being he was over seas...

Also, I wouldn’t be so fast to just say he wasn’t there on D Day....

After talking some more with the daughter, she clearly stated that her father was there on the initial invasion day.

Here are the scenarios:

-Her Father could have lied to her

- She could be wrong

- She could be lying

- The documents are wrong

- the documents don’t tell the full story

I’m not going to rule out anything until I see his records. I will not saying anything with 100% certainty yet. I don’t know why you are.

I like the look of both the helmet and the pack. One thing to consider as far as the condition of the pack is that as a Navy man he wasn't living out of that pack everyday in the open all the way across France and Germany like an infantry soldier would. If he made it to shore with the pack it probably got dumped in a tent with their gear once they set up their base of operations or field hospital etc. I think it looks just right for that kind of use. I agree with the storage comment concerning the reddish stains. The other thing is that we don't know when he got that pack. He may have worn his pack into a khaki rag and been issued a new one just before he got out. Anyway, like I said, I like it.

Thank you for the kind words, it definitely has a great look to it.
