Is there a date on the document?....I'm of the thought that documents from the CW era would have been hand signed by the governor....This one sounds like the signature is included with the documents printing....Bodes

Mine is dated 1868

Sounds like a certificate given for service during the civil war....Than issued out post war...Probably given to all service men from Maine who fought in the CW....I would have to believe it's way overpriced....Bodes

I just looked through a bunch of completed ebay sales for the last few years as archived by worthpoint.com. There are a lot of CW certificates that sell for well under a hundred, but some do go up into the $200-300 range and special ones go way beyond that. I think your seems comparable to some I saw (including for Maine) that sold for $150-200. I'd imagine unit and combat record makes a big difference here.

The one with the big asking price may have been influenced by a sale last year for also close to a thousand dollars.

in the back of the frame ther was 2 dates though 1868 and 1934.

1934 could be the date it was framed. what do you think ?

Right next to these date was also what could be a name: Jud or Gud ?

it could potentially be the last name of that vet. If you look at the certificate in details, it seems like his last name is a short name that starts with a G or J

so eventually this certificate could belong to a Haron Jud or Haron Gud.

any thoughts?

My own experience would be to date the thin wooden backing to the late 19th century.

I think you are right aznation. it's probably Aaron

Now, if you could just get the last name. Have you tried back lighting the certificate to try and read the last name? Maybe use different color of lighting or a black light. Also, it's amazing what a good scanner and even basic photo software can do. Changing the color levels and contrast/brightness can pull up details that are tough to see otherwise. Just a thought.
