Mitch,

I wish that you had some much better quality photos of the wing. I like the things that I am seeing though. I would be rather interested in hearing why you don't think this wing is any good. This way, you can help coach other collectors on what to look for.

al, I asked the question due to the look of the wing. the pictures are not good. the back of the wing to me has a new look with no wear this is how I made my judgement. a shabby excuse but, you have to admit there is to much fakery going on today and no one wants to get caught. plus the fact I am no expert or that educated in wings. sure there are those that I can say are good but, at times I ask to make sure. I have had members ask me about helmets - web gear - knives and to the best of my ability will answer however will also tell them to get other opinions to be sure.

Mitch,

All wing collectors will probably agree with me that it doesn't really matter how many other collectors say the wing is good, it is how you feel about it at the end of the day that should make your decision as to whether you should have it in your collection or not.

I have had many discussions with a number of people whose opinions I hold in high regard who have been divided on whether or not a wing is authentic. I know that for my part, I would much rather pass on an original than to put a reproduction in my collection. I'm sure that others feel the same way.

What I like about the wing above is that I haven't see this particular Meyer hallmark reproduced before. Also, I like the fact that the pin stops at 90 degrees and that it doesn't flop open 180 degrees like known reproductions. I also like the patina on the wing. Without better photos, I cannot give you a 100% vote of confidence, but for what I am able to see, I don't see anything that gives me pause.

Good luck with your collecting!

Allan

They look ok to me from what I can see. Of course all the caveats apply with not being able to have a good picture of it to judge

I don't think it is an "early badge", I would say it is probably from WWII, maybe into Korean war period. I am not sure as to the exact dates, but IIRC this badge could have been worn well into the 60's.

Just to quibble, in general, the NS Meyer's hallmark isn't a fake. The restrikes were, in fact, made by NS Meyers. They simply used different hallmarks/sterling marks on the new wings than they had used on the earlier made wings. The same type of issue exists with the use of the findings on the wings.

pat, we learn something new every day. I thought meyer metal and rolled plate were early hallmarks----------- not post or kw era. I was also looking at the catch which is a c type. and here thinking of the drop in style for these hallmarks. now I have learned a little more.
