Hi all. I'm new to this forum and hoped to get a little help with possible IDing some things in a tin type photo of a family member from long ago. Unfortunately there is no specific date or name, which is why I am asking. Hopefully I can get to the bottom of it, as we have tons of other pictures, files, etc of our families genealogy dating back before the 1600s.

So, based on the picture, we estimate 1880-90s judging by his kepi, m1885 dress uniform blouse, and Springfield m1884 trapdoor rifle.

He is from NJ (as am I - on his belt buckle), and from his kepi - in the 7th infantry, G company. I can't make out any rank.

Also does anyone have any ideas, or possibly know what his medal is?

Sorry about the picture quality, I tried to upload the full size high res photo, but realized it is restricted to 251k.

Anyway, thanks for looking.

Here is a better picture of the medal in the best clarity I could get.
