Garandomatic Posted April 28, 2018 Share #3 Posted April 28, 2018 I wasn't aware we had considered this. Very interesting!
Dave Posted April 29, 2018 Share #4 Posted April 29, 2018 Wow...that could have been explosive! My grandmother (a Budapest native) never forgave the Soviets (or the Russians in general) for what they did...
patches Posted April 29, 2018 Share #5 Posted April 29, 2018 I wasn't aware we had considered this. Very interesting! Me neither, this would be the first time I'm hearing of the U.S. intervening in Hungaria, this has to be troops of the 11th Abn Div, but what then after they drop on Hungaria?, would need a massive NATO ground offensive out of West Germany, across Czechoslovakia to follow up, at that's war across the board. patches Posted April 29, 2018 Share #6 Posted April 29, 2018 So far see no mention in or on any pages relating to the 11th Abn Div and a Budapest drop
MDR75 Posted April 29, 2018 Share #7 Posted April 29, 2018 This would have been in support of the Hungarian nationalist during the Soviet invasion Oct/Nov 1956. The Hungarians were getting a bit friendly with the West and the kindly Soviets felt the need to crush this. 1000's killed.
mvmhm Posted May 4, 2018 Share #8 Posted May 4, 2018 He might have been relating a rumor that was circulating...you know how the rumor mill goes into high gear sometimes. I don't see any weapons in the photo either... Mark sends
Garandomatic Posted May 4, 2018 Share #9 Posted May 4, 2018 I never thought of that... I had a vet tell me his buddy was on the USS Texas and that it was actually the ship that sunk the Bismarck by firing over the British... all hush hush as we weren't yet at war. Pretty sure there's no chance of that one being true...
