Hey all!

I have a uniform ID'ed to a 4th Marine Division vet who I believed

served in all 4 of the 4th's campaigns, including Iwo Jima. His name is David O. Ryan

and he was from West Virginia. Any information or copies of his paperwork

would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Rick

Very nice uniform! There is a David O. Ryan who served with A Battery and later HQ Battery 1st Battalion, 14th Marines, 4th Marine Division from 1943 to 1945.

Awesome uniform! Haven’t seen too many USMC alphas with cross stitching like that!

Very neat uniform! Ryan was a radio operator so the striker is correct. It's not the norm to see them that high on the sleeve, or to see cross stitching like that on the SSI for a Marine blouse, but there was a lot of uniform personalization going on then. As a note, the ADSM ribbon is incorrect for him but it looks like he is wearing it in place of the American Campaign Medal. I have a soft spot for radio operators, I was one. Congrats on the nice pick up!

Here's a photo of him wearing dress blues.

I can't make out what the top row of ribbons are.

Any ideas?

Thank you! I was wondering if he would have done the stitching himself.

Interesting. The muster rolls do show that he was called back up in 1950, but he shows being a PFC, no listings as a corporal. Could be he got promoted on discharge. As for the ribbons, hard to tell in the 1st pic. In the 2nd the senior ribbon looks like a MC Reserve medal. I would order his file if that uniform was mine.

I was speaking with his granddaughter and she said that he was promoted to corporal and then busted back to private, but they never got the story why. It would be interesting to know. How do you go about ordering his file?

Thanks!
