The Most Remarkable Photo of WWII, at Least to Me

This blurry blotchy old photo is to me probably the most incredible photo taken during the war.

My Dad took it sometime between 6:00 and 9:00 AM on the morning of April 19, 1945. He and his company were crossing Machinato Inlet, Okinawa, on a foot bridge put up overnight as part of a rare surprise night operation against the Japanese. It is one of only a dozen of the many pictures he took during the war that actually got home. It also is the only evidence that shows exactly where and when Dad was during the entire war.

Here is a slightly more famous and clearer picture taken by someone with obviously better film and camera.

And one more, an aerial photo taken sometime after the battle.

Hello Mikie, that's a very atmospheric photograpgh. The soldiers almost appear to have a ghost like quality and, as has been said, since it's taken by your Dad it's priceless. Thanks for posting!

Great photograph. What unit did your father serve with?

He spent the whole war in 106th Infantry of the 27th. He was in the anti-tank company, but they often were used as infantry.
