easterneagle87 Posted April 16, 2018 Share #1 Posted April 16, 2018 I went to a barn sale this weekend and saved this Marine veteran plaque / certificate. First picture is of what it looked like. I almost missed it, and it was brought to my attention when I heard someone talking about it. When I asked what they found, the old gentleman got mad because he thought I was going to poach it. Farther from the truth, I was just curious. Turns out he was an old 82nd Airborne Trooper. We eventually made up, and I came home from it. Long story short, it is in rough shape. Broken glass, some mold on the certificate and all coming apart. Named to: James F. Brown, CPL, 4.2 5th Marines, 1st Div. If this can get to a good home, contact me and we'll work out a deals I found an Army one as well and will post that one later.

easterneagle87 Posted April 16, 2018 Author Share #4 Posted April 16, 2018 Does the "4.2" possibly stand for 4.2 inch motar?

wcdino685 Posted April 17, 2018 Share #7 Posted April 17, 2018 I am assuming this is him since you found this in a sale in Cali. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/148515895/james-f.-brown He was in 1 US Marine Div>5th Marine Regiment> 4/2 should be 2/4 I would think sine 2 Battalion 4th Marines is under the 5the Marine Regiment. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1st_Marine_Division_
Captainofthe7th Posted April 17, 2018 Share #8 Posted April 17, 2018 You're correct, 4.2" Mortar Co., 5th Marines. James F. Brown USMC s/n: 1185771 MOS 2531 Lots of James F. Browns in the musters so I found the 4.2/5/1 rolls and went from there. He shows up first on the March 1952 roster, so he joined sometime during that month.
