MattS Posted April 3, 2018 Share #1 Posted April 3, 2018 I visited the Smithsonian last week and tried to photograph this display with very little light. I'd like to make a recreation of his hat, looks like a standard slouch hat with a ribbon-trimmed edge, staff officer insignia, and gold cords. It bugged me that the cords weren't centered. Any other insight appreciated!
268th C.A. Posted April 3, 2018 Share #2 Posted April 3, 2018 That's cool. You'll see that a lot in museum's. Volunteer's that get to touch stuff we would love too, most are clueless. Thanks for posting...

VMI88 Posted April 3, 2018 Share #4 Posted April 3, 2018 Google Dirty Billy's Hats of Gettysburg - he specializes in reproducing historical hats and should have all the trimmings. I also like Tim Bender's hats a lot but I'm not sure if he'll have the insignia. Again, should be easy to find with Google.
MattS Posted April 3, 2018 Author Share #5 Posted April 3, 2018 I'm familiar with Dirty Billy's Hats, I've checked his site and they aren't cheap. I ordered the cords and the insignia from Blockade Runner, they carry the correct 'twisted cords' as opposed to the smooth and shiny ones. I just need a hat to put them on! Thanks for the leads. mdk014 Posted April 5, 2018 Share #6 Posted April 5, 2018 Dirty Billy isn't cheap, but he makes darn good hats. I have two of his and they are worth the money.

MattS Posted July 23, 2018 Author Share #8 Posted July 23, 2018 I'd like to think that short of the Staff Officer badge on the front, Sherman's hat looked like this 150 years ago.
