I am a collector of all things Illinois military. I recently purchased a letter from Camp Logan; but this one seems not to be the Houston, TX, one where the 33rd (including my G. Uncle) & 80th Div's. trained in WW1. Willis E. Pettegreen is the writer to his wife, but gives his address as: Co.N 2 Rgt. Rifle Range,

Camp Logan, Zion City, Ill. The cover seems to have an Ill. postmark. I think I have seen reference to a Naval Militia Camp called Camp Logan, but this letter is written on WW1 YMCA. Any ideas? Thanks.

Zion is the closest municipality to South Beach within Illinois Beach State Park. The North Beach is in Winthrop Harbor. The beach was originally part of Camp Logan, a rifle range developed by the Illinois National Guard in 1892. In World War I and World War II it served as a rifle range for the Great Lakes Naval Training Station. The range remained in operation until 1973, when it was transferred to the Illinois Department of Conservation. In 1950, the Illinois Dunes Preservation Society was established to maintain the natural qualities of the beach. With the help of the Illinois Department of Conservation the area south of Beach Road was established as the state's first natural preserve. The northern beach, between Beach Road and the Wisconsin state border, were obtained between 1971 and 1982.

Hello aznation- Thanks very much, your information ties together my letter and remembering photo's of naval militia Camp Logan. I was born in Chicago, and grew up in Aurora, so I know the area. Thanks also for the image info.

Thanks ,aznation, for posting this information. First I have ever heard of this rifle range, though I have not collected much Navy WWI over the years. Good to know! MHJ
