bertmedals Posted March 31, 2018 Share #1 Posted March 31, 2018 Hisao Matsumoto's obituary was printed in the Washington Post yesterday and today (copy is attached). He was a USAF veteran of the Korean War. But the rest of his story is remarkable. His parents immigrated to the US in the early 1900's. Mr. Matsumorto was born in Los Angeles in 1929. In 1931 his parents returned, taking him of course, to their home town in Japan -- Hiroshima. At the age of 16 Mr. Matsumoto was working in a rifle factory in Hiroshima and was on the job when the atomic bomb was dropped. He miraculously survived the bombing. At the age of 19 he returned to the US and in 1951 joined the USAF. He served at the Far East HQ in Japan during the Korean War and was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant in 1955. He had a long career at the Library of Congress and ultimately became the head of the LOC's Asian Division. It is also remarkable that he was awarded the Japanese Order of the Sacred Treasure. The obituary has many more details and is well worth a read. He led an inspiring life and left an incredible legacy -- rest in peace Hisao Matsumoto and thank you.
