robnz Posted March 29, 2018 Share #1 Posted March 29, 2018 Hi Guys This is one of two helmets I have picked up. The first is a USMC front seam fixed bail M1. The cover is quite worn and effectively rusted and rotten on the inside of the shell. I won't attempt to remove it and will leave it as is. It has a Firestone liner which has matching wear and tear and a very faint name I can't discern. The liner appears to have been repainted at one point during its service life and has signs of yellow showing through. Do you have any idea why this may be? I would appreciate your thoughts on this one. All the best Rob

Frogskin7 Posted March 29, 2018 Share #4 Posted March 29, 2018 I believe the cover is the 1953 Dated One.
robnz Posted March 30, 2018 Author Share #5 Posted March 30, 2018 Thank you frogskin, yes I suspect so too and that is fine with me. Does anyone have any thoughts on the yellow underpaint of the liner? No doubt it's an early WW2 lid reissued in the post war period
Dogsbody Posted April 2, 2018 Share #6 Posted April 2, 2018 Hi robnz, just some observations I hope you find usefull: looking at the 'feet' of the chinstrap loops I think the shell is made by Schlueter. They didn't start production before 1943. The liner appears to have black oxidized brass A washers and triple weave HBT suspension. This would indicate a late war liner (mid 1944 - 1945). Unfortunately I don't have an explanation for the yellow undercoating you mention. Rene
robnz Posted April 6, 2018 Author Share #7 Posted April 6, 2018 Thanks for your input everyone. Did Schlueter produce a fixed bail? I have snuck a peak and it is front seam. Rob

Rob Yes, Schlueter did produce fixed loop M1's. Here's a picture of one the loops of my Schlueter. Rene
