Okay, what is this?

There are no markings.

It perfectly reverses from Chocolate Chip to Woodland.

Is it experimental?

Thanks.

I am tempted to say it is a private purchase item.

But then again, we just had a USMC BDU that was posted that was reversible to a three tone desert pattern.

I agree this is likely a commercial item, but intended for sale to soldiers.

On this thread they show the reversible BDU to three color desert as a Natick experimental piece, so who's to say that the above hat wasn't part of this test as opposed to just a private purchase item?

Found this one at a swapmeet last month. It appears to have seen use with someone. Insignia sewn on both sides.

The big flap. Seems to have that random brown thread running through all of it, even though that's not where it's sewn to the hat.

....ha, well, when I served in the early 80's. I saw as well as wore myself various headgear that was unlike the OG/BDU caps that were issued. At Ft Hood, at that time there were a variety of surplus stores selling all sort of ballcaps. Then in Germany, many of us purchased "Graf caps", which was a real thing. It pretty much described any cap that wasn't issue. I had and gave it to a buddy before I left. The most comfortable cloth BDU cap, in retrospect, wish I'd of kept it. I gave it to a buddy of mine, Chuck Hoke. He thought it would be funny to see the 1st Sgts look on his face if that cap returned to formation after I left. What made it stand out was its over long bill. I stupidly wonder if he kept it or passed it on to someone else.
