A friend of mine recently found this large original photo at a flea market in PA. You can read the talley's on some of the sailors as USS Newport. I am guessing the photo was taken during the Spanish American war but was hoping someone would be able to confirm. The USS Newport took part in the conflict and was credited with assisting in the capture of 9 Spanish ships. After the war it was decommissioned and then recommissioned as a training vessel.

Thanks in advance.

This man seems to be the highest ranking man on the ship but cannot tell if that is Tilley or not

I really like the photo because of the inclusion of the Marine Ship Detachment wearing spike helmets. Would a training vessel have a Marine Detachment?

I really like the photo because of the inclusion of the ship's cat. Would a training vessel have a ship's cat onboard?

Yes indeed they had a Marine detachment! A quick scan of 1898 shows the ship having 13 men under a 1st Sgt...great photo find!!!

Thanks Dirk. There seems to be 10 marines pictured here and this perhaps is the 1st Sgt. Of course the parrot is the best part......

Eric I checked a few entries for 1900....and they had 12 so I am sure the numbers changed slightly over time.....would be interesting to get an exact date so can can see if you have any famous Marines in that group....oh yes, nothing tops the parrot !

Love the cat too!

I think they were used as rat killers?
