Tonomachi Posted March 19, 2018 Share #1 Posted March 19, 2018 I saw this yesterday at an insignia show in Northern California. I decided against buying it as I wasn't sure it was original but mostly it was too pricey ($275.00). It looks like a jeweler made piece but I can't decide if it is a casting or a stamping. The way the hollow areas along the backside of the shoulders are formed makes it look like a casting but there is excess edge material from front to back which makes it look like a stamping. I didn't bring my jeweler's loupe to see if I could make out striations along the edge which would indicate a die cut. What I thought was interesting about this wing were the stars and arrowhead. They seem to have been manufactured out of silver and soldered on by hand. So I thought to myself why go to this trouble and not use the bronze stars and arrowheads from common ribbons. I have only seen this once before on a suspect British made Firmin hallmarked US para wing where the stars were made of the same metal (not sterling) as the wing. I like the pin back assembly with the drop in catch and 90 degree opening pin. I thought others who collect para wing variations would like to see this piece. These are the only photos I took of this wing.
triplecanopy Posted March 19, 2018 Share #2 Posted March 19, 2018 I agree with you. The front side looks pretty sharp, no berries or folds, but the reverse side gives me pause. It does have some cast looks about it. I think you did right to pass.
BaldEagle06 Posted October 27, 2018 Share #3 Posted October 27, 2018 Help me with the attachments. I thought the stars were for combat jumps and the arrowhead went on the ribbon bar to indicate participation in an invasion. Did those who jumped into Normandy on D-Day place a star and an arrowhead on their jump wings? Thanks
Wake1941 Posted October 27, 2018 Share #4 Posted October 27, 2018 I dont think Ive ever seen an arrowhead like that, seems sloppy to me as well
pfrost Posted October 28, 2018 Share #5 Posted October 28, 2018 Frankly, I don't see anything about the wing that makes me think its a casting. You never know about anything that was added, like the stars or arrowheads, but the wing itself seems fine to me.
