Yes it looks original and is a good example of a fully badged BDU.

Did you have a question about it?

I went through Army ROTC with Dave and can verify that this is one of his BDU shirts. The badges match up too. I would have expected to see his Korean jump wing on the right side of the BDU top though. Dave was a pretty interesting guy. He went into ROTC as a Staff Sergeant and was already a Master Parachutist and SCUBA qualified. He was in the Simultaneous Membership Program with an SF Reserve unit after coming off of active duty. He got his Ranger slot through ROTC.

Dave majored in Botany and was force branched Chemical upon commissioning. Dave drove to FT Benning and had a conversation with the Chief of Infantry in order to get his first branch choice- Infantry.

I knew an officer like that with a similar ROTC experience.

He said nothing about his prior service to his fellow cadets. Then one day they were ordered to show up for drill in their fatigue uniforms. He shows up with his Ranger tab, Special Forces tab, Diver qualification, Airborne and I forget what else.

One of his fellow (younger) cadets leaned over to him and quietly whispered "Hey man, you can't wear that stuff unless you earned it." My friend said nothing and just smiled back... and that is when his fellow cadet, somewhat startled, realized he was not dealing with your average college sophomore!

5th ID SSI on his right sleeve makes him a Panama (Just Cause) vet. One of the more obscure campaigns and not a common FWTS-SSI (a 7th ID SSI would have the same meaning, BTW.)

Foreign badges haven't been authorized on BDU's since the mid-1980's.

Which is not to say that some don't wear them, but it's not authorized. A reservist or national guardsman who works far from the HQ's can probably get away with it for a while but anyone who works "near the flagpole" would not be able to do so.

Dave and I were commissioned in 1987. I would say that the BDU jacket dates to the early 1990's since it doesn't have the Elvis collar etc. Dave was with the 5th Infantry Division when we went to Panama, so it all checks out.

Do you know what year Dave went to Basic? I believe there was a King in my platoon
