dave307 Posted March 13, 2018 Share #1 Posted March 13, 2018 Here is an original mills map case. Notice how the strap is the same color as the pouch. What kind of compass went into the holder that is on this map case? Any comments are welcome
GWS Posted March 13, 2018 Share #2 Posted March 13, 2018 Very nice map case! I don't have a Mills case, but a contract made M-1910 pigskin case by BAT&S Co. The compass in it was made by Keufel&Esser Co.-New York. It's 1-1/8 in. in diameter and about 3/8 in. high. I doubt that the Mills compass was made by the same Co. however, it was probably similar. Is the holder-socket on your case threaded for the compass or does it attach some other way? I don't have a Mills catalog with the map case in it, but the Officer's dispatch case could be purchased with a compass in it for $1.00 additional. I'm sure someone here will have the Mills case with a compass in it.
dave307 Posted March 13, 2018 Author Share #3 Posted March 13, 2018 Thanks for the comment. The compass case is not threaded. It's about 1 3/8 diameter. It looks like it would have just slipped inside.

I also like to have personalized gear. Trench art on gear is great.

I also like to have personalized gear. Trench art on gear is great. The one I have belonged to Ewart Johnston, CO of Company L, 116th IR, 29th Division AEF. It still has his message books inside along with hand-drawn maps used in 1919 during training exercises in the Haute-Marne area of France. It is pea-green like yours and has eagle snaps. Mills 1917. robinb Posted March 14, 2018 Share #7 Posted March 14, 2018 I have two. One is undated while the other is August 1917. The undated one has a compass that is only marked Made in France. The other one never had a compass installed.

'Flage Guy Posted March 14, 2018 Share #9 Posted March 14, 2018 Ha- so that's what that web tab is for; very cool to learn this! Evidently this one didn't get a Compass fitted on either...outstanding stuff shown here, gentlemen!
dave307 Posted March 14, 2018 Author Share #10 Posted March 14, 2018 Some great map cases. robinb to have 2 in that shape thats great. I have learned allot from just seeing some pictures thank you. Here is one more i have. It's the same style but in the light canvas and not nearly as well made as the Mills. The other difference is there is no grid overlay inside. Just clear plastic. Why the difference ?
